How to get around Formentera Ibiza

Below, we listed some of the most popular ways to get around the Balearic sister island of Ibiza - just scroll down to learn more!

How to get around

With the longest distance being just 19km from harbour village La Savina to Lighthouse La Mola, Formentera is a relatively small Island. Since local authorities try to protect the nature of the island, it can be a time and energy consuming procedure to get a permit to bring your car from Ibiza to Formentera by ferry, especially during the summer months. That's why it is recommended to use the following means of transportation:

Bikes

As the island is mostly flat and relatively small, the bicycle is one of the most popular means of transportation. When you arrive at the port of La Savina, you can't miss the bike rentals, which offer both classic and electric bikes. According to the official website of the local tourist office, there are over 30 running, cycling and walking routes to choose from. Although Formentera is a small island, it may be advisable to choose a different way of getting around, as the kilometres can add up if you're trying to explore several of the island's attractions.

Scooter hire

By arrival with the ferry at Port La Savina, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to rent scooters. When using this motorized mean of transportation, it is important to watch out for bumps and holes on streets that lead to the white sandy beaches of the island.

Car hire

Although there may be restrictions to take your car from Ibiza over to Formentera, there are numerous possibilities to rent out a car. Especially for a bigger group, this can come in very handy instead of renting out a scooter for everyone. There are now also some car hire companies on Formentera that rent out electric cars, if you prefer electric to classic fuelled cars. It is important to note that there are limited number of available parking lots — especially if you drive to popular beaches on Formentera.

Yacht

For the ones that are looking for a more convenient, private and luxurious option to explore the neighbour island of Ibiza, chartering a yacht is perhaps one of the best options available. As mentioned in our guide "How to get to Formentera Ibiza and why you should visit" chartering a yacht is as well the best way to reach the island paradise while avoiding mass-transportation like a ferry.
